Important Youth XC Announcement
BTC Families,
Looking forward to the next few weeks that includes the Thanksgiving holiday and the integrity of our pod setup we have created, we are going to make a few adjustments regarding the schedule. As you’ve seen at your individual pod practices, we screen each athlete with temperature checks and questions about exposure/activity such as travel.
With the expectation that many families will be traveling out of state or hosting additional persons at their home for the holiday, we are going to cancel in-person practice the week following Thanksgiving (11/30-12/6). We will provide digital practices that week and will be looking into hosting a few digital events Monday, Wednesday and Friday that week. The final week of in-person BTC Youth XC will be moved to the next week (12/7-12/11).
There are two definitive race opportunities left on the calendar. Additionally, Jesuit High School Coach Tom Rothenberger is looking to add two races on 12/5 and 12/12 at Jesuit High School. Please stay tuned for information on those events. See below the two race opportunities:

BTC Youth XC - Registration Reminder
REMINDER
If you have not yet completed the pre-registration for the youth XC program for this year, please do so this weekend. We are in the process of finding small 10 person training pod locations for all athletes. It’s quite a puzzle, but we’re optimistic to figure out a good solution for everyone. Thank you to everyone that has already signed up. We plan to have athletes separated into locations and groups by the middle of the week. More information is included below about the details of the youth season this year.
LATEST UPDATES
Due to the wildfires in Oregon and the shut down of Portland Parks through September 24th, BTC Youth XC in-person practices have to push to a start date during the week of Sept 27th. We will extend the program to run through Dec 6th. We will aim to have at least one to two weeks of digital instruction ahead of in-person practices. Please register as soon as possible to be placed in a practice pod and to receive digital training.
BTC Youth Registration
Athletes will be meeting once a week for in-person practice in 10 person pods with 1-2 coaches and will be provided one digital workout per week. Additionally, we are continuing to explore competition opportunities this season. Please make sure to read the practice protocols form ahead of sign-up.
Please fill out the pre-registration form below. This information will be collected to determine our 10 athlete pods with coaching availability. Pods will be organized by location, day/time, age and ability. To view the location options, please see the practice zones image below. These practice zones are not necessarily where you live but where you are able to practice. With many more smaller groups this year we’re exploring more parks and practice locations. Please select as many zones that your athlete(s) would be able to attend. The more zones you select, the higher probability that your athlete(s) will be placed in a practice pod. The athletes will be informed of their specific practice location within the zone once put in a pod.
Pre-registration does not guarantee your athlete participation in practice this season. You will be informed if your athlete(s) are in a practice pod and forwarded payment information. This season we will be requiring a minimum age limit of eight. All athletes participating must turn eight by Dec. 31st, 2020. At this time we will also not be allowing high school athletes to sign up for this program.

2020 BTC Youth XC Update
Hello BTC Youth Families,
We wanted to provide you an update regarding the 2020 BTC Youth Season. We will be moving forward with registration for the season under the structure of starting with one in-person practice per week and one digital practice per week. Our aim is to have registration up soon and start practices the week of Sept 20th and go through November 28th (Thanksgiving week). Practices will be separated into pods of 10 athletes with 1-2 coaches per pod. Pods will be spread out through the Greater Portland and Beaverton area with in-person practices happening Monday-Thursday. We will aim to create the pods based off general location choice, age and ability as well as considerations for siblings.
We hope to utilize the small pod groups and the digital practice, set up similarly to the digital dual with OTC this summer, as an opportunity to create a tight knit community of young runners and encourage engagement by establishing creative team challenges. Our goal with the digital practice is to go beyond just sending workouts. Our digital practice will also see our BTC Pro athletes often providing the workouts and challenges to help foster BTC connection.
In order to register and participate this season, please read the attached practice protocol form. These protocols will need to be followed in order for your athlete to participate this season. If you’re needing suggestions on a mask, please check out BUFF or something similar. If the pod coach feels that an athlete is not abiding by the practice protocols, they will be asked to leave. If there are multiple instances of non-compliance, we will ask that the athlete does not return the rest of the season and you will be provided no refund on the season. In order for the season to be conducted in a safe manner for our athletes, coaches and families we will need the help of each parent to help instruct their athlete about the rules and their expectations to follow them.
Please stay tuned for registration soon as we work through the logistics of setting it up. Thank you!
2020 BTC Youth XC Season Survey
Hello BTC Youth Families,
We hope that you and your families have been staying safe and finding ways to be active over the summer! We were thrilled at how many athletes signed up and participated in our Digital Dual this summer against the OTC Youth. It was great to see everyone to show off their creativity and engagement through running and we look forward to continuing that momentum through the fall.
Many parents have reached out about what the 2020 BTC Youth XC season will look like. As you know, we face unique challenges this season and ultimately look to make the best decisions regarding the season with your athletes health and safety as our top priority. Our program will definitely not be the same as normal this year. We will likely have very limited, if any, traditional XC race competitions and we will need to have smaller practice groups across multiple locations. The Nike campus practice location will not be an option for us for the foreseeable future. That said, we’re doing our best to be creative and find ways to bring practice and race opportunities to young runners however we can in a safe manner.
What is needed?
In order to move forward, we are asking for your feedback to help us better prepare and understand your families needs surrounding cross country practices this fall and what we can facilitate by filling out a survey below. Please take the time to fill out the survey as soon as possible.
We appreciate your honest answers to the below questions. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please email youth@bowermantc.com
BTC Youth Shoe Opportunity
BTC Families,
We hope you are all staying healthy and safe as well as finding the opportunity to utilize running as a positive outlet for your young athletes and your family. We’ve been working hard over here at BTC at finding ways we can keep our youth athletes entertained and engaged as part of the BTC family. If you have not seen, we have been putting out frequent Youtube videos on our Bowerman Track Club channel that feature a lot of good content from our BTC Pros including exercises, race recaps and athlete to athlete Q+A sessions. If you’re looking for ways to keep your young athletes motivated, we recommend checking it out.
Please stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks about a summer program we are hoping to launch for our youth athletes. In the meantime, if you have a youth athlete who wears Nike shoes in youth sizes, we have the opportunity for a handful of athletes to receive complementary shoes. The shoes are free and are yours to keep. This is a first come, first serve sign-up that is dependent on number of shoes and sizing availability. Youth Coach Patrick Richie and the Nike team will reach out if you have been selected.
NOTE: this is for youth sizing only (up to 7y)
BTC Youth Practices Cancelled- ALL LOCATIONS
Tuesday/Thursday Practices Cancelled This Week At All Locations
Due to continued caution around the coronavirus and mimicking the steps taken by many public schools in the area, we are going to cancel all practices at all locations (Nike, N. Portland, Sherwood and Lake Oswego) this week (3/10 and 3/12). We will not make up this week later.
We are sorry to have missed the last two weeks of pre-track practice and hope that everyone preparing for their school or CYO Track League feels prepared by our first two weeks of practice plus these last two weeks of given workouts.
Despite cancelling practices this week, we want to continue to offer workouts to those interested. Please see below the workout suggestions:
Suggested Tuesday Workout
Speed Workout - Make sure to do warm-up run and drills/strides. The point of this workout is to run hard for a short period time with longer rest to recover to go fast again! Ideally your pace for these will start around your goal mile pace and get faster. There is recovery in between each interval. Older athletes should attempt to shuffle jog their recovery. Younger athletes should walk.
13-14 Boys and Girls and Nike Red Group - 10 minute warm-up, Drills and Strides, 3 sets of 4x400m,
Set 1- 60seconds rest, Set 2- 90seconds rest, Set 3- 2:00min rest, 5 minute cool down.
11-12 Boys and Girls and Nike Green Group - 10 minute warm-up, Drills and Strides, 3 sets of 3x400m, Set 1- 60seconds rest, Set 2- 90seconds rest, Set 3- 2:00min rest, 5 minute cool down.
9-10 Boys and Girls and Nike Orange/Blue Groups - 5 minute warm-up, Drills and Strides, 6x400m with 90seconds rest, 5 minute cool down.
8&U Boys and Girls and Nike Yellow Group - 5 minute warm-up, Drills and Strides,4x400m with 2minutes rest, 5 minute cool down..
Suggested Thursday Workout
Hill + Strides Workout - Make sure to do warm-up run and drills/strides. The point of this workout is to build strength and power by running hard up hill and then recovering back down. Work with whatever hill you can find! Preferably a longer gradual hill. Try not to do it on a hill that is too steep. Immediately start the next hill once you have returned to the bottom of the hill. Strides following the hills should focus on good form and should be faster than warm up strides (think true sprinting!).
13-14 Boys and Girls and Nike Red Group - 10 minute warm-up, Drills and Strides, 8x45-60 second hills with jog down recovery, 2-3 minutes rest following hills, 4x150m hard strides, 5 minute cool down.
11-12 Boys and Girls and Nike Green Group - 10 minute warm-up, Drills and Strides, 8x30-45 second hills with jog down recovery, 2-3 minutes rest following hills, 4x150m hard strides, 5 minute cool down.
9-10 Boys and Girls and Nike Orange/Blue Groups - 5 minute warm-up, Drills and Strides, 8x20 seconds uphill with jog or walk down recovery, 2-3 minutes rest following hills, 4x100m hard strides, 3-5 minute cool down
8&U Boys and Girls and Nike Yellow Group - 3 minute warm-up, Drills and Strides, 8x15 seconds uphill with walk down recovery, 2-3 minutes rest following hills, 4x100m hard strides, 3 minute cool down.
