PLEASE READ FULL MESSAGE
After the Middle School State Meet (different than USATF State Meet), we will begin the USATF Junior Olympic part of our season. In contrast to our meets so far this season where all ages raced together, the USATF races are separated by age and gender. See below of all USATF details.

Girls 8 and under (2009 or later birth year)
Boys 9-10 (2007, 2008 birth year)

Girls 13-14 (2003, 2004 birth year)
USATF Season Details
State - Corban University, Salem, Or on Saturday, November 11th
All BTC Athletes are eligible to compete at the state meet.
Regionals – Woodland Park, Seattle WA on Saturday, November 18th
Running at regionals does require competing and qualifying at the State Meet on Saturday November 11th. Most BTC runners will qualify for regionals individually or as a part of the team (see qualification criteria below)
We will send out a link for entries to Regionals after the State meet.
Nationals - Tallahassee, FL on Saturday, December 9th
Running at Nationals requires competing and qualifying at the Regional Meet on Saturday, November 18th (see qualification criteria below). Please note we will likely qualify one team of 8 runners in ALL age groups. Last year, we had 38 kids qualify and run at Nationals in Hoover, Alabama. We will send out flight and hotel information for nationals soon. If you are even thinking about the possibility of going to Nationals we strongly recommend that you reserve a hotel room in the next week or two before they all fill up. If you end up not going you can cancel the hotel room after regionals at no charge.
Signing Up for USATF State Meet (Saturday, November 11th)
Just as we have done all season, we will send out an internal sign-up and enter kids in the meets, BUT for the USATF season we CANNOT enter any child that has not already joined USATF AND provided proof of age.
Parents, you are responsible to get your child registered with USATF and assigned to the Bowerman Track Club. Don’t wait too long to do this! (Steps below)
We are aware you can get the next two years of memberships for the price of one if you wait until Nov 1st. If you know that you will be able to send in all of your sign-up materials on November 1st, it's ok to wait until then BUT MAKE SURE YOU TAKE CARE OF IT ON NOVEMBER 1ST. The age verification takes a day or two so it will be a quick turn-around to get everything taken care of in time. If you aren’t sure if you have a current USATF membership use this link to check https://www.usatf.org/membership/help/number.asp .
3 STEP SIGN-UP PROCESS
STEP 1. Purchase a current USATF membership
Here is the link for the sign up:
http://www.usatf.org/Products---Services/Individual-Memberships.aspx
Our Club Number is 0820
(If you aren’t sure if you have a current USATF membership use this link to check https://www.usatf.org/membership/help/number.asp )
STEP 2. Proof of Date of Birth (birth certificate, passport)
Send a copy of birth certificate or passport to usatfmembershiporegon@gmail.com
(you only need to do this if you haven’t done so in a prior year)
STEP 3.
Click this State Sign-Up Link here to let us know your child wants to run the state meet. We will enter the athlete in the race.
There is a $12 per registration fee to be paid when you pick up your number at the team tent on Race Day. Please complete steps 1&2 before step 3.
Location: Corban University, Salem OR
The deadline to complete ALL THREE steps is End of day Nov 2nd.
State, Regionals, Nationals Qualification Process
State meet is November 11th in Salem, OR – this is the qualifier for regionals – The kids will run separate races in two year age groups (shown above). Most of our kids will qualify (top 35 individuals and top 5 teams in each age group)
At the state meet we will spread the best kids between 2 or 3 teams to maximize the number of teams we qualify for regionals.
The regional meet is November 18th in Seattle, WA – this is the qualifier for the Nationals meet on Dec 9th in Tallahassee, FL. Probably about 50% of our kids will qualify from regionals to nationals. The top 30 individuals and top 5 teams advance in each age group. We will likely qualify a team in every age group.
At the regional meet we will field our strongest teams with selection based on finish position at the state meet.
At the national meet we will field our strongest teams with selection based on finish position at the regional meet.
If you want advice on whether your child will qualify – email us directly or catch me at practice – I’ll be happy to advise you on the approx. odds. youth@bowermantc.com
At the national meet we will field our strongest teams with selection based on finish position at the regional meet.
Results for all our meets so far this season and the dates and locations of future meets can be found here:
http://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/School.aspx?SchoolID=30214
Clicking on your child’s name from any of the results will show you their results from all races they’ve run from all seasons.

We will be sending out detailed information with everything you need to know about the USATF season this weekend, so be on the lookout for that announcement.

Halloween Practice
This year, Halloween falls on a Tuesday, so we will not hold practice at Nike or Sherwood on Tuesday, October 31st. In place of Tuesday practice, we will meet for practice/Halloween Run on Monday, October 30th at Nike. Practice will be short and easy because the Middle School state meet is the day before, and practice will mostly consist of our normal warm-up and drills and then our annual Halloween run around Hollister. Kids are encouraged to wear their costumes, and parents are encouraged to join us in costume to add to the Hollister Horror.
NE Portland group will not hold practice on Halloween, but they will hold practice at normal time on Monday, October 30th at Mt Tabor.
Bowerman TC Fundraising Help For Burnside Footbridge Project
BTC is helping the Portland community raise money for a pedestrian footbridge over Burnside road. Help us make the community a safer place to run and be active!
October 16th - 23rd BTC Donation Drive
The Portland Parks Foundation is seeking the support of the Bowerman Track Club community in raising funds to build a footbridge over West Burnside, providing a safe passage for runners and hikers on the Wildwood Trail in Forest Park.
Connecting 30 miles through Portland’s famed Forest Park, the Wildwood trail serves over 80,000 runners, hikers, and schoolchildren each year. However, a current section of the Wildwood trail crosses over West Burnside, forcing cars to stop unsafely for trail users crossing the road, creating a potentially dangerous situation.
As a club we strive to engage in opportunities that impact our local community. We know that many of us, including Youth, Masters, Elite, and Professional athletes, enjoy using Forest Park and its numerous trails, and as a community based club we support this local initiative. Donating is not required of our members, but please consider doing so if you are able. This bridge will go a long way for the future safety and running accessibility in our community. $5, $10, $50 -- anything is helpful!
BTC will set a matching program within the club where donations made by individual pros, masters, elites and youth families will be matched by club funds, up to $1,500. Additionally, the Portland Parks Foundation will have an anonymous donor pledging to match the first $25,000 given beyond the original fundraising goal, setting our donations to be quadrupled in value.
To donate, club members can visit www.oregonskitchentable.org/footbridge-over-burnside and indicate “BTC” or “Bowerman Track Club” on their donation. The Burnside Footbridge campaign runs Oct. 16 - Oct. 23. If you have already made a donation to the footbridge, send us an email with your name to emily.pritt@bowermantc.com so we can add your donation to our match pool.

Upcoming Races: XC Showdown (10/12) and Lents Park (10/14)
Please Read All!
We have an important update regarding our upcoming race schedule! Given the recent cancellation of the Champoeg race this past weekend, we have been working to add another race option this coming weekend. Fortunately we were able to collaborate with a race taking place at Lents Park in Portland on Saturday, October 14th and add a youth 3k race. This will basically be an intersquad meet with just Bowerman kids racing, but it will still be a great opportunity to race.
For anyone interested, we are still offering the NW Middle School XC Showdown in Corvallis on Thursday, October 12th, but similar to earlier this season when we had the McMinnville and Seaside races back to back, we only want kids to participate in one of the races. Following these races, our next 2 races will be on a 2 week interval with the Middle School State Meet on 10/29 and the USATF State Meet on 11/11.
To sign-up for either of the upcoming races, see the information and linked sign-ups below!

Champoeg Race Cancellation and October Racing
Champoeg Race has been cancelled for 10/7/17. We are looking into more October racing options.
Parents,
We have recently learned that the Champoeg Race that we have attended the last few years that was scheduled for this coming weekend has been cancelled for Middle Schoolers. The meet will still be held for High Schoolers, but they have decided to not hold a Middle School race this year. We apologize to anyone who was already planning to attend.
The cancellation of this meet leaves us with a thin racing schedule for the next couple weeks. We currently have the NW Middle School XC Showdown scheduled for Thursday, October 12th and then the Middle School State Championships on Sunday, October 29th. We understand that the Thursday, October 12th meet is difficult to attend and many would prefer to have something closer to Portland, so we are looking into options about attending another local meet or hosting our own team time trial the weekend of October 14th. We will send updates in the next couple days.
As of right now, there are no active meet sign-ups you need to be worried about.
Nike Portland XC Results Link
Congrats to all those who competed this past weekend at the Nike Portland race. It was our biggest showing in terms of numbers at a meet ever. Click the link above for full results. If you want to see how you did relative to last year, just click on your name in the results and it will show your time from last year if you raced.
Jackets and Jerseys
From here forward we will only be bringing jerseys and jackets to meets (possibly on occasion to practice), so if you still would like to purchase any of those, plan on doing so at the meet or even better, send us an email with your specific request.
