Shamrock Run - BTC Code: 1250
Attention BTC Youth and Parents,
This year, the Portland Shamrock Run is on Sunday, March 19. The Shamrock Run offers race distances of 5k, 8k, 15k and Half Marathon. For any youth athletes interested in racing, the 5k should be plenty far, but parents, feel free to try your hand at the longer distances. To register, got to www.shamrockrunportland.com. Make sure to use our team code and save $4 on your entry! All race entries increase by $5 on January 14, and you must enter by January 31 to use the team entry code. Should be a great way to get back into racing after some Pre-Track workouts in February and early March!

Nationals Recap, Banquet, Pre-Track Program
Lots of info. Please read all.
LOTS OF INFO BELOW. PLEASE READ ALL!
BTC Youth,
XC season is over and winter is here in full force! We hope that everyone was able to eventually make it home safely from nationals and stay safe this week here in Portland with the snow! Last weekend in Alabama was a great weekend for our club, and it marked the end of what has been a fantastic year for the youth program. Whether or not you competed at state, regionals or nationals, you all played a part in making this season a huge success. Thank you all for a great year!
After such a great year, some may have the desire to continue running on a regular basis, but we would like to remind everyone that it is important to take a break from running after a long season. The training and racing from this fall will definitely be a springboard for everyone going forward with their running, but rest and recovery is just as important as the training. We know that many of you are involved in other sports, and that is great! Staying active is always encouraged, but at least for the next couple weeks, make sure to take a break from running. There will be plenty of time to get ready for the spring track season after the new year (see below for more info on our Pre-Track practices).

Pre-Track Program
Before you know it, the spring track season will be upon us. Each year we offer a pre-track program to get kids ready for the upcoming track season. The practices are held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 5:00 PM - 6:15 PM at the Bo Field on Nike campus, and they structured similarly to our XC practices. This year, practices will be held from February 14th to March 9th (8 total practices). Unlike our XC practices, the Pre-Track practices are held at Nike campus only (no Sherwood or NE Portland practices). The goal of theses practices is to reestablish running routines and set the kids up well for the spring season. For the actual racing, most of our kids participate in the CYO track & field program that is organized through the local K-8 catholic parish schools. The program offers great competition for all levels and you do not need to attend one of the schools to participate. For more info on the program, you can visit this link: http://www.cyocamphoward.org/lnk_track.

Athlete Number Pick-Up
Coaches will pick up our team packet and numbers on Thursday. We will plan to have a team meeting on Friday morning at 10:00 AM at the Courtyard Birmingham Hoover (BTC Hotel) and will pass out race numbers then. The race entry for each athlete is $16 and we will be collecting that payment in cash or check then. We will also accept payment for Friday Team Dinner at that time (see below for more info) if you want to just write one check for everything. After the team meeting we will depart from the hotel @ 11:00 AM for the course preview.
Weather Forecast
The weather for Friday and Saturday looks good, but don't think that just because we are headed south it's going to be super warm! The forecast for Birmingham/Hoover is sunny with Highs in the mid-40s during the day and Lows in the 20s overnight, so make sure you don't just pack shorts for the entire trip.
Team Dinners
We have arranged reservations for dinner on Friday and Saturday night for everyone that would like to attend. Friday dinner will be at 6:30 PM at Vecchia Pizzeria & Mercato (click for directions). This will be an Italian buffet with salad, dinner rolls, chicken alfredo pasta and marinara/meatball pasta. The cost of this dinner will be $20 for adults and $14 for kids. We will pay for the dinner up front and then we ask that you pay us in cash or check. The easiest option will probably be if you want to just include dinner payment in the check that you give us for race entry on Friday morning. We are assuming that most athletes and parents will attend this dinner. Let us know if you do not plan to attend dinner on Friday night.
For Saturday dinner, we have a reservation at 7:30 PM at Jim ’N Nick’s Bar-B-Q (click for directions). Everyone will be able to pay for this dinner separately at dinner that night. We know there are some families leaving on Saturday afternoon that won't be able to join us for dinner.
Additional Jacket Purchases
There have been a few parents that have asked about purchasing one of the BTC jackets that the kids have. We still have all youth sizes S - XL and adult sizes S - L. If you would like to purchase any additional jackets for athletes or parents/family, respond to this email and we can bring the jackets to practice tomorrow or bring them along to nationals. Additional jackets for athletes are $30 and $40 for parents/family (we heavily subsidize the jackets for the athletes).
Nationals Hotel LAST CHANCE
Click for last chance on hotel sign-up for Nationals.
Parents,
For anyone planning to have a hotel room as part of our block for nationals, you should have received a separate email from me. If you did not receive the confirmation email or you would still like to get on our rooming list, please let me know by 7 AM tomorrow (Thursday). We have a couple King rooms remaining.

Pictures From Regionals
Our apologies for the delay, but you can view pictures from the Regional meet on 11/20 here: Regionals Pics. There are pictures of all the races, though no guarantee we got good ones of every child. We had 500+ pictures this time, but they should be grouped together by race with the older age groups first and the younger age groups later in the album. Let us know if you have any pictures you'd like to share!
We also have a few photos from the Meat Stick Relay, although we are still working on how to get the best action shots at night.
Practice resumes Tuesday this week at 5:00pm at the Bo Jackson turf field. All kids are welcome to attend even if their season is over. As always in these later months, we advise that kids bring multiple layers to practice. Even if they don't run in them it's good to stay warm during post-run stretching and core.

Thanksgiving Week Running Recommendations
We will not have practice at the Nike campus during Thanksgiving week, but here are some workout recommendations.
As was mentioned in the previous announcement. We will not be holding practice at Nike campus this week. For those who plan on continuing on to Nationals, it is important that you maintain your running routine this week even without practice. If you can, try to meet up with some of your teammates to do the workouts. Beyond the two workouts listed below, we recommend you maintain whatever your normal schedule of running has been on non-practice days throughout the season. See the chart below for workout instructions specific to your color group. Also, make sure to get your fair share of turkey!
Also, we've had a few people respond about their plans for nationals, but still have a lot to go. Please let us know as soon as you can. If you on the descending order list wondering if you will have a chance to go to nationals, stay up to date with the lists linked below. The lists will update base on everyone's decisions to attend Nationals.

IMPORTANT!! Regionals Results, Nationals Info
PLEASE READ ENTIRE MESSAGE!
BTC,
Great job to all those who competed today at regionals. Today was by far the best regional meet we have ever had. We were able to qualify at least 1 team in every age group and 2 teams in both the Boys 11-12 and Boys 13-14 divisions. Now it is on to Nationals! Below are links to today's results and the lists of BTC qualifiers for nationals in Alabama. Although Nationals is still 3 weeks away (December 10th), we are trying to get the list of who is going nailed down relatively soon so families have ample time to plan. We will fill our teams on a descending order based on today's results, regardless of which team the athlete was entered under today. We ask that everyone that has qualified respond to this email to confirm if you are planning to travel to nationals or not. If an individual's spot on the team is forfeited, we will open the spot up to the next athlete on the list to fill out the teams.

Hotel Sign-Up
There was a previous email about signing up to reserve a room in our block of rooms at nationals. We have a block of 50 rooms (25 Double Queens and 25 King w/ sofa bed) at the Courtyard Birmingham/Hoover. We have a negotiated rate of $94 per night which includes a breakfast each morning. The hotel is located 1 mile from the Meet Hotel (Embassy Suites) and about 6 miles from the race course. The double queen rooms are all spoken for and there is currently only 1 of the King w/ sofa bed rooms left. By signing up for a room in our block, you will initially be given a room for the nights of December 8 (Thur), 9 (Fri) and 10th (Sat). If you end up not needing all 3 nights due to your individual travel plans, you can cancel one of the days once the room has been transferred to your name. If you are wondering if you're on current list, you can check here for the current list of confirmed rooms:

Practice
With next week being Thanksgiving, we expect that a lot of our coaches and athletes will be traveling. We will not hold practice on Tuesday or Thursday at the Nike Campus. For Sherwood and NE Portland, look for specific announcements from Coach Humble and Coach Punches. We will send out a recommended training schedule for the Thanksgiving week to do on your in the next couple days. We will hold practices on Tuesday, November 29th, Thursday, December 1st and Tuesday, December 6th leading into nationals. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to continue coming to practice regardless of qualifying for nationals. The work is not over yet!
Regionals Reminders
BTC,
For all those racing tomorrow at regionals tomorrow (Saturday), there is a $15 entry fee for the race. We will be collecting this when you arrive, and it can be paid in cash or check (NO Credit Card). Please plan to arrive at least an hour before your race. Make sure to factor in time for parking. It wasn't great for the state meet and it will likely be worse this weekend with many more teams participating. The course will almost certainly be muddy again tomorrow. We highly recommend wearing spikes for the race and make sure to bring warm dry clothes for after!
MEET VOLUNTEERS REQUEST:
USATF has asked for a few volunteers to help direct parking and monitor the course. With such a large team, it would be great if we could provide a couple people to help them out during the day. If you are able to help for a period of time before, after or between your child's race, please let us know at the tent tomorrow.

Nationals Qualifying
The regional meet is the qualifier for the national meet in Birmingham, Alabama on December 10th. To qualify for the national meet, you must be in the Top 30 individuals or the Top 5 teams (This was misprinted as 3 teams in an earlier email). If a team qualifies, that allows 8 runners to advance as part of that team. We hope to qualify a team in each age group, but there will be good competition from the Northwest region. All BTC athletes racing at regionals are eligible to qualify for the BTC national team should we qualify one. In other words, it does not matter which team they entered under at regionals. The top 8 BTC finishers will fill out the team for nationals.
