Dear Coach…

Woody Kincaid

So much of success belongs to those that get the most chances, who doesn't want another opportunity? That is, we are empowered by those that give us the most options in our sport, and our lives. This then is a post to thank Coach Natalie Reyes, my cross country and distance track coach at Columbine High School, for leading columbine xc and sending me down the gritty and beautiful road that is competitive running.

My focus on the sport didn't start until after Natalie Reyes (then a 25 year old new coach) took over as head cross country and head distance coach at CHS. Coach Reyes would push us at practice without making it a fray, always focusing on what was most important for each of us. And despite being new to coaching, she would spend hours researching work outs and coaching philosophies, organizing group trips for the team. I loved running and working hard because of how Reyes conducted practice, with intention and goal setting, but supportive and fun with down time.

On an even more personal note, even though I only see and speak to N. Reyes once every few years, the road map she gave me towards collegiate running has given me a job I could hardly imagine at 18. And despite the years of distance from high school, I consider Coach Reyes not only one of the most enjoyable relationships of my adolescence but her influence over my choices has made her one of the most important people in my life.

Thanks Coach!
