Dear Piper…

Amos Bartelsmeyer

Dear Piper,

One of the silver linings of this past pandemic-year has been spending more time with you than in the previous five years combined. Quarantine had the potential to fray a relationship, but instead it afforded me a front-row seat to your consistency, resilience and caring, and made me more grateful than ever to have you in my life.

Thank you for showing up every day for the people that matter to you. You were there for me through the longest injury of my career thus far, all while handling your own challenges at work and in life. You always found the time and energy to check in with me, and I’ve watched you consistently do the same for your family and friends.

Thank you for holding me to the same high standard you set for yourself. You wake up before dawn every day to get in a run or climb while I’m just beginning my fourth REM-cycle of the night. I’m sure you occasionally wish we could trade places, but know that your commitment is inspirational. Your diligence in taking care of the small things provides major motivation for a serial procrastinator like myself. You make me a better partner, athlete, brother and friend.

Figuring out where life goes post-college is no small feat, but you’ve taken it in stride. It’s a fate that I feel I’ve been able to temporarily cheat while pursuing professional running, but I know that whenever I’m ready to take the next step in life, I will have an example to follow of how to walk that road with purpose and determination.

I can’t imagine this past year without you, and I’m looking forward to many more. Thank you for your love and companionship. Happy Birthday!

Love,

Amos
