Shalane Flanagan
Position: Assistant Coach | 2020
Simply put, Shalane is one of the most accomplished distance runners in US history. In her long and legendary career as a runner Shalane amassed an Olympic Silver Medal, a World XC Bronze medal, 16 USATF National Championships, 15 All-American honors, and 3 NCAA titles. She made 4 Olympic teams, set 7 national records, and won the 2017 New York City Marathon. For nearly two decades she was at the top of US distance running.
Shalane grew up in Marblehead, MA and attended the University of North Carolina. After graduating she trained with Coach John Cook for several years before joining Coach Jerry Schumacher in Oregon in 2009. She was the first female member of the Pro group and over the next decade in Oregon helped to build the BTC women’s professional team into the strongest in the country. When she retired in 2019 her leadership, success, and work ethic made her a natural fit to join the BTC coaching staff and help the next generation of athletes achieve the heights of her own career.
Long before she became a coach, Shalane was dedicated to the project of building up women’s running and providing younger athletes with a powerful role model. In addition to her work with the BTC Youth program and mentoring younger professional athletes, she has released a series of best-selling Run Fast, Eat Slow cookbooks with her friend (and professional dietician), Elyse Kopecky, aimed at helping runners fuel themselves properly and deliciously.
At home Shalane enjoys cooking (obviously), art, and spending time with her husband, Steve, their cat, Shubie, and their young son, Jack.
